Dr Kirkland’s investigation for BBC News in January 2018 revealed the way some NHS hospital trusts recorded their A and E performance had changed in the last 3 months in England. The UK Statistics Authority told NHS England to explain the changes which it said could have left people reaching “misleading conclusions”.
Following the intervention from the UK Statistics Authority NHS improvement published letters it sent to trusts which led to the changes in reporting and NHS England calculated the impact it had on the national figures.
Dr Kirkland reported this for the BBC News Channel and online.
Her investigative journalism was highly commended in the statistical excellence in journalism awards from the Royal Statistical Society.
