In 2016 Dr Kirkland found hospitals and GP practices in England and Scotland were failing to carry out recommended HIV checks. Guidelines said patients in areas with high rates of HIV ought to be offered a test when they register with a GP or are admitted to hospital but research carried out by Dr Kirkland for BBC Radio 4’s You and Yours programme and the Victoria Derbyshire programme suggested many NHS providers were not doing this. Health officials told the BBC the prevention of HIV infection remained a priority.
Following the investigation, Dr Kirkland was contacted by the Elton John Aids Foundation, who offered to fund HIV testing in Lambeth. Dr Kirkland was given this development exclusively which she covered for the Victoria Derbyshire and BBC online. As a result of the investigation Victoria Derbyshire was also given an exclusive interview with Elton John on World AIDS Day.
