In 2017 Dr Kirkland’s investigation found doctors in the UK who had routinely not told patients they were born with differences in their sexual development, also known as intersex. She found examples of this practice as recently as 2012. A leading paediatric consultant told BBC Radio 4 this practice had been “widespread”.

Jeanette, who was 71 when the piece was broadcast, was operated on at the age of 16 to remove her hidden testes but only found out the truth when she was 50.

The story was broadcast by BBC stories, Radio 4’s PM programme and online.
